Provenance: From the collection of Barnett Freedman
This picture likely dates to the period when Mahoney was studying at the Royal College of Art, and shows a sombre, familial group gathered around a piano. Freedman was a talented musician himself, but he is not one of the figures among this party.
He was however depicted by Barnett Freedman in his Stanhope Street Group Painting of 1926. In this work, Mahoney is shown with his back to the viewer on the left. He turns the sheet music for the figure at the piano, and is seen with a violin at his feet.
